HUGH BEAUTY!!
Swindon golf star wins the Dunhill Links Trophy & half-a-million first prize!
Today was a truly great day in Swindon's sport history as golfer David Howell captured the Alfred Dunhill Links Trophy at St Andrews.
The Broome Manor member brilliantly sunk a 10ft putt on the iconic 18th green to beat American Peter Uihlein in a play-off.
The win comes 7 years and 124 days after 38-year-old Howell won his last Tour event, the 2006 PGA Championships.
The two-time Ryder Cup star bagged £500,000 for his efforts in the prestigious Pro-Am style tournament, with his playing partner, actor Hugh Grant, one of the first to congratulate Howell on his win.
Thanks for the car, dad!
Video of David Howell describing his first visit to St. Andrews
Those who have followed David throughout his career will know he learnt his golf as a junior member at Broome Manor GC in Swindon, supported all the way by his father Ray, who used to own Howell's Furniture shop in Old Town.
At a Supermarine FC dinner in 2007 he recounted the funny story of his first ever visit to St. Andrews - scene of his triumph and big payday today - when £20 for bed and breakfast was unaffordable and he was forced to sleep in a Peugeot 405!
How times have changed!
