49th For Howell

OPEN GOLF 2015: Birdie finish for Swindon golf star at St Andrews

Sunday's one-over 73 when his rivals were under par always left Swindon pro David Howell with too much to do in The Open at St Andrews.

But a birdie at the last for a two-under 70 in the final round left the 40-year-old in 49th place and a -4 finish - that after a double-bogey at the dreaded road hole.

Par run after wind delay keeps Swindon golf star in the hunt
9.08pm Saturday, 18 July

Course-winner David Howell stands seven off the lead after a frustrating day at St Andrews.

The Swindon golf star eventually completed his second round just before 9pm tonight after an eleven hour delay caused by high winds.

But nine steady pars - including a superb four on the 17th - means Howell recorded a one over 73 to easily make the cut and 25th place.

The former Alfred Dunhill champion tees off on Sunday at 12.05pm alongside Stuart Cink - who Howell played with in 2009 when Cink triumphed at Turnberry - with the championship now extended to Monday for only the second time in its history.

Rain delay leaves Howell with late tee-off time

A deluge of Biblical proportions means Swindon's David Howell will have to wait until the early evening to continue his challenge at this year's Open.

After play was suspended for 3 hours, the two-time Ryder Cup player now tees off at 6:43pm, with every chance he will have to resume in the early hours of Saturday to complete his round.

At -4, Howell is currently tied 14th (as of 12 noon), just three off the lead.

Swindon's David Howell up with the leaders on day one at The Open
3.25pm Thursday, 16 July

Broome Manor star David Howell has made the best possible start in his bid to win The Open at St. Andrews.

The 40-year-old finished the day at 4 under par after completing his first round, just three behind the leaders.

Howell birdied three holes in a row from the 6th and then followed up with a birdie at the 10th and then the 14th. Bogeys at the 13th and 16th were his only setbacks.

His later tee time tomorrow is also seen as an advantage due to wind and rain forecast for tomorrow morning.

As the winner of the Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews in 2013, Howell is already a course winner at 'the home of golf' and finished in the top ten in last weeks Scottish Open.

We'll be updating this page throughout the weekend.
