Sunday Lunch at The Marriott

Our mum about town Kelly Jobanputra tries out the Sunday lunch offering at The Marriott on Pipers Way

Review of The Marriott
by Kelly Jobanputra

The Sunday roast dinner is a British institution and one that I make sure my family does every week but last weekend I had the pleasure of going out for an upmarket version when I went to the Marriott in Swindon.

Starting at 12.30 on Sundays, The Marriott opens its restaurant doors - offering an exquisite range of different foods at a price of £13.95 for adults. (Children under 6 eat free, 6 to 12 year olds eat for £6.95 and 12 year olds plus eat for £13.95)

First there are the usual obvious foods on offer for a carvery - such as the slow roasted loin of pork, the beef and the steamed broccoli, carrots and sweetcorn. I was impressed with the fact that the vegetables were just simple as this avoids any hassle when you can't have them cooked in butter due to dairy issues.

But what made this Sunday lunch experience even better was the fact that there was also other meals on offer at the same time that all came within the one price. There was a chicken hot pot on offer, which was succulent and filling, and a market style deli meat selection (this was filled with pickled onion, gherkins, horseradish and mustard).

The salad bar that was there as well was a crowd pleaser with my family as it's always refreshing to have a bit on the side of your main plate.

As you would expect with The Marriott, the manners of the serving staff were impeccable and they gave everyone their full attention.

I liked being able to have some top of the range smoked salmon on the side of my classic roast from the cold seafood section because I always think it's a treat for the taste buds if you can have a range of protein on your plate.

After all of this, there was barely room for dessert but when apple & almond crumble is on offer with custard it's hard to say no. But for those of us who fancied something all together different, there was a winter berry panna cotta with fresh fruit and cream.

This was a wonderful eating out experience but to quote my 5 year old daughter word for word: "There should be simple ice cream on offer for the children as we don't often want a fancy dessert."

She has a valid point because sometimes all you want are the basics. Add ice cream into the mix and this could then be a 5 out of 5 star review.
