Our definitive guide to the different cuisines that are available in Swindon restaurants

Multi-cultural Swindon certainly has a taste for ‘foreign’ food.

If you chose to eat a different cuisine every night, we reckon you’d have somewhere new to go in Swindon and the surrounding villages for a whole month.

So with the World Cup coming up we thought:

 

Just how many different types of food are there in Swindon?

 
We make it 13 specific single nationalities, but that doesn’t include restaurants featuring food from regions rather than nations.

 

Cosmo, for instance, serve food from nine different countries, and other restaurants have dishes from, say, around the Mediterranean, therefore touching a range of different palettes.

To simplify, we’ve also generalised with Indian restaurants, some of which are run by people with Bangladeshi roots. Sometimes, ‘Chinese’ can also be a loose term, especially when a restaurant is actually more specific in offering, for example, Cantonese food. And the lines are also blurred with Mexican, which may stray towards Tex Mex. But we have made a distinction between Italian and Italian/American.

All this makes putting an actual figure on Swindon’s culinary diversity difficult, and the picture broadens still further when you take account of venues selling snacks or takeaways – which our list doesn’t.

 

You can’t go out to eat Greek or Turkish food in Swindon, for instance, but you can take some home.

 

We’ve also excluded pubs, even though an increasing number of those are offering recipes from exotic locations.

One thing is for sure – curry is Swindon’s favourite ‘foreign’ food, with Indian restaurants being the most numerous, closely followed by Italian and Chinese.
