Luke Rooney's debut inspired Town as they closed in on the top of League Two.

 

Swindon's new six-figure signing came off the bench in the second-half to provide the cross for Paul Benson's flick to break the deadlock.

 

Matt Ritchie then missed the chance to make it 2-0 when he blasted a late spot-kick over the bar.

 

But with Southend, Cheltenham & Crawley all failing to win, one goal was enough for Swindon to close the gap at the top to just three points.

"Rooney showed us straight away why we wanted him so much," commented a pleased Paolo Di Canio, before ranting at the decision of the referee to dismiss him for his conduct in the technical area, his third sending-off of the season.

 

"Even if they send me off, we will win this league, no problem," Di Canio fumed.
