Town fans waved goodbye to the slim chance of grabbing automatic promotion today - and now fear the nightmare of missing out on the play-offs all together.

 

Swindon's third away defeat in row means they stay in 6th place but now lie only a point ahead of the chasing pack, led by Walsall (who drew) and in-form Leyton Orient (who won).

 

Even the Town manager Kevin Macdonald was forced to apologise for his players at full-time.

 

"We were a bit embarrassing in the first half and I apologise for our performance today. We were very poor. 

 

"Our crosses weren't good enough. Our set pieces weren't good enough. It was a bad day at the office all round."

 

Sheffield took the lead after dominating poccession from the opening whistle when Chris Porter headed in Tony McMahon's free-kick. McMahon was again the provider when supplying Dave Kitson to seal the game with ten minutes to go.
