Swindon's tough pre-season campaign continued this evening as they welcomed Premier League mainstays Aston Villa to the County Ground.

 

With England's top division kicking-off in just a few short weeks, Villa manager Tim Sherwood opted to field a number of his high profile players for the friendly fixture including new £9 million signing, Jordan Amavi.

 

Seemingly unfazed by the Premier League glamour, it was Town who started the brighter of the two teams, with the sprightly Nathan Byrne proving particularly worrisome for the Villa back line.

 

But for all of Swindon's good play, they were still struggling to carve out any meaningful chances and it was the midlands outfit that pounced first.

 

Town's defenders failing to deal with right back Alan Hutton's low cross, and leaving Scott Sinclair with the easiest of finishes. 

 

The home team continued to huff and puff but despite half chances for Nathan Thompson and Fabien Robert, Villa extended their lead with 10-minutes to go.

 

A nightmare for substitute keeper Jamie Stephens' leaving youngster Jerell Sellars with the easiest of finishes.

 

Town manager Mark Cooper commented "I thought we played quite well in patches tonight. We looked pretty solid. I like the shape of the team and I thought we dominated a lot of the possession as well. I think we could have threatened the goal a bit more."
