Swindon At The Boleyn

We look back at the Town's travels to Upton Park

As West Ham United prepare to play their last game at the Boleyn Ground after 112 years, we thought we'd recount the times Swindon Town have taken on the Hammers in the East End.

Since their first clash in 1899, home and away our record against the boys in claret and blue is W16 D17 L19, with six wins at the Boleyn.

But it's a couple of Cup games in London that probably bring back the most memories for Town fans in the 1960s & 70s.

West Ham Utd 3 Swindon Town 3
28 January 1967
FA Cup 3rd Round

What a game at Upton Park this was, with Town taking on West Ham's World Cup winning trio of Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst - who scored a hattrick in a 3-3 thriller in front of 37,400 fans.

West Ham Utd 1 Swindon Town 1
25 January 1975
FA Cup 4th Round

Third Division Town took on the Hammers in the year they lifted the FA Cup and brought them back to the County Ground for a replay after a 1-1 draw. Peter Eastoe grabbed the equaliser for Swindon in a side that included Trollope, Moss and Joe Butler.

This is classic bygone action from Upton Park with Town playing in their League Cup winning all-white strip with no club crest or sponsors!

Not to mention the quality pitch!

West Ham Utd 1 Swindon Town 2
30 August 1978
League Cup 2nd Round

Revenge of sorts here for Town (after the Hammers beat us in the 1975 replay at the County Ground) with a stunning 2-1 win in the League Cup.

Town had the likes of Kenny Stroud, Ray McHale and Chic Bates in the line-up, with most notably Chris Kamara as sub!

Ian Miller and Chris Guthrie grabbed the goals.

West Ham Utd 1 Swindon Town 1
24 February 1912
FA Cup 3rd Round

We thought we'd give this a mention even though it was 104 years ago, because the Swindon scorer that day was probably our most famous player - Harold Fleming.

His equaliser brought West Ham back to the County Ground, and a 4-0 drubbing, as Swindon and Fleming headed to the FA Cup semi-finals - still our best performance in the Cup.
