After a comprehensive 3-0 win against Charlton on the weekend, there was an air of optimism in the air at the County Ground this evening.

 

It lasted for 16-minutes and didn't return.

 

A deflected shot got Eastleigh off the mark, before Andy Drury made it two for the non-leaguers with a perfectly executed counterattack - topping the move off with a beautiful dinked finish over the despairing Vigouroux.

 

Town's new director of football Tim Sherwood tried in vain to turn things around from the touchline, but the rout was completed 15 minutes from time.

 

Mikael Mandron slotting away from the penalty spot and effectively sealing the stunned League One sides first-round exit.

 

Delfouneso capitalised on a late howler from the Eastleigh keeper, but it was a small consolation at best - and in truth, far from deserved.

 

A disappointed Town head coach Luke Williams commented "We struggled to keep the intensity that we showed on the weekend and we’ve come off second best.

“We were prepared and the players knew what the opposition were going to bring to the table, but tonight their will was stronger and we’ve fallen victim to not maintaining standards."
