Swindon 2 Peterborough 2

Town denied late once again

Coca-Cola League One

RESULT: Swindon Town 2 Peterborough United 2

Town scorers: J Smith 10, Cox 81
Peterborough scorers: McGovern (OG) 20, Batt 90

For the second game in four days Town were denied all three points right at the death.

This time it was Shaun Batt inflicting the pain, as Peterborough grabbed a draw in injury time just as Bristol Rovers did on Saturday.

His quality strike from just outside the box in the 90th minute cancelled out Simon Cox's 81st minute effort, which until the dying seconds had looked just enough.

But against the in-form side in League One, Town failed to hang on, despite taking the lead early on through Jack Smith and matching their opponents for endeavour and commitment according to caretaker manager Dave Byrne.

"It was an even contest," he admitted, "but they were better than us at keeping the ball."

"I'm not going to name any players, but if you're going to see a game out you need to keep hold of it [the ball] and we didn't."

Town remain in 18th place.

New manager latest

Chairman Andrew Fitton confirmed he had started talking to a number of candidates for the new manager's job - but Ady Boothroyd and Steve Cottrell are not two of them.

And that a player-manager is 'highly unlikely'.

Cottrell tonight was working as a studio pundit for Sky Sports and has indicated, alongside ex-Watford boss Boothroyd, he was looking for re-employment at a higher level than League One.

Fitton revealed that one potential applicant is a 'very big name in the game' and that a couple are 'big surprises' but the chairman refused to be drawn who may be the frontrunner for the job.

"All I can say is that a player-manager would be a risky appointment at this stage in the club's development. We're unlikely to go down that road."
