Swindon Town 3 Oldham 0

Coca-Cola League One

RESULT: Swindon Town 3 Oldham Athletic 0

Swindon scorers: L Peacock 49, S Cox 53 & 70

A second-half Simon Cox brace handed Swindon an emphatic victory over promotion chasing Oldham – and in the process quashed any fears of relegation this season.

With Town searching for a vital three points Maurice Malpas elected to play the experienced Lee Peacock back in his old role as target-man alongside Simon Cox.

And the Robins' boss' tactics couldn't have worked any better.

The former Reading hit-man should have ended his scoring drought as early as the fourth minute when he found himself one-on-one with Oldham keeper Mark Crossley, but he blazed wildly over from 15 yards.

This was the best chance of an uneventful first 45 minutes where neither team looked like troubling the scoreboard.

However, in typical Swindon fashion the second-half performance was a total transformation, as they took the game to the visitors.

Lee Peacock was in the right place at the right time to nudge home Anthony McNamee's left wing cross, to give Swindon a much needed lead.

Town fans didn't have to wait long for the second as once again the impressive McNamee was the provider, his through ball was collected by Cox and the young striker turned his marker and fired past the helpless Crossley.

Much to the delight of the fans Swindon continued to press as they looked to kill the game off with a third goal.

On 70 minutes the best passing move of the match gave Cox the opportunity to wrap things up with his second and Town's third of the game.

Some neat interchange passing between the two front men allowed Swindon's top scorer some space on the edge of the area and his well struck shot found the bottom corner.

The result was just what manager Maurice Malpas had in mind, and will go some way to easing the pressure he had been feeling earlier in the week.

With their League One status all but secured for next season, the remaining five games should see the introduction of some of the fringe players as Malpas begins his summer re-building plans.
