Hair & Beauty: FAKING ITWhether you get your nails done as a special treat or on a regular basis, here's Katie Smith's guide to the false nail
Whether you get your
nails done as a special treat or on a regular basis, they all
make us feel the same way, feminine and gorgeous. Our hands play a large part
in our day-to-day lives and are on show 24/7, so a lot of us like to pay a
little bit extra to add that bit of sparkle.
When you go to nail
bars, most offer the choice between acrylic and gel nails. Acrylics are a
powder based chemical. Your nail is filed down and cut short, a tip is then
applied using nail glue and the acrylic powder is applied over the top using a
liquid called monomer to soften the acrylic so it is easier to transfer.
Gel nails do not
require any nail glue, but again the nail is filled down and then a piece of
foil like paper is slotted under your natural nail and the gel is applied
upwards to create an extension. UV light is then used to harden.
There are many pros
and cons to both types of nails:
Pros for Acrylics:
- Long lasting.
- If they break, they are easy to fix at home.
-
Costs less.
Cons for Acrylics:
-
They file down up to 80 out of the 100 layers
of your nail bed down causing pain and server damage to your nail beds.
-
They don’t look natural
-
The application involves strong chemicals
making them especially bad for pregnant women who are advised not to have them
done.
Pros for Gel:
-
A lot healthier for your nail beds.
-
Look more natural.
-
Eco friendlier often as chemicals aren’t as
strong.
Cons for Gel:
-
Do not last as long as acrylics.
-
More expensive than acrylics.
-
Needs to be filed off which takes a lot longer.
It
is down to you on what you would rather choose out of the two types. It is
definitely considered to be better for your nail growth if you went for gels,
but acrylics last so much longer.
If we've tempted you into getting your nails done, then you'll be glad to hear that there's plenty of places in Swindon where you can get a whole range of gorgeous nails & colours.
