Development breathes new life into Penhill

£5million regeneration project tranforms Braydon Court

A £5million regeneration project to rejuvenate part of Penhill is nearing completion.

The development of Braydon Court to include three new shops and 38 affordable homes began last April and almost half the new homes are now occupied.

Swindon Borough Council and Westlea Housing, part of the GreenSquare housing group, are working in partnership on the scheme and the entire project is expected to be completed by early summer.

A new McColls convenience store opened in October and the two remaining retail units are expected to be open in May.

The housing will be a mixture of 31 properties for rent, which will be advertised on the council’s Choice Based Lettings system, and seven homes for ‘part rent, part buy’, or shared ownership.

Looking forward

As part of the scheme, a new road will replace a footpath linking Penhill Drive and Milston Avenue via Durrington Walk.

The regeneration project was the subject of a public consultation and forms part of the council’s promise number 39: “We will redevelop a range of other sites including Old Town Square, Cavendish Square, Sussex Square and Braydon Court.”

“I am really pleased this project is coming together and residents are already enjoying living on the new site," commented Cllr David Renard, Cabinet Member for Health, Housing and Adult Social Care.

“We have worked hard to improve the facilities in Braydon Court and I’m sure it will be of great benefit to the community when the whole scheme is finally completed in the coming months.”
