Swindon twinned with Disney!

Walt Disney World's first-ever twinned town officially honoured at the magic kingdom

Swindon was officially honoured at Walt Disney World today when the plaque marking the twinning of the Wiltshire town with the popular Florida resort was unveiled at the famous Magic Kingdom.

The plaque, designed by the famous Disney Imagineers, will take pride of place in the United Kingdom Pavilion at the Epcot theme park throughout 2010, while Swindon’s own Twinned Town street sign will be flown back to the UK for the town to showcase.

The twinning ceremony, which was attended by The Mayor of Swindon (Cllr David Wren), TV presenter and competition judge Angellica Bell, the creator of the winning Swindon nomination Rebecca Warren, her nephew Aaron, 11 and niece Amy, five, officially marked the twinning between Swindon and Walt Disney World.

Rebecca said: “It’s been such an incredible day for us all. I can’t believe Swindon’s name is alongside Walt Disney World here in the UK Pavilion at the Epcot. And I can’t wait to bring Swindon’s sign home too!”

“Today has been a truly wonderful occasion," commented Duncan Wardle, VP Creative Inc, Walt Disney World.

"It was great to host both Rebecca and Mayor David Wren of Swindon. All of us at Disney World are remarkably proud of our new found relationship and look forward to welcoming the people of Swindon to the magic of Disney.”

More than 500 people from across the UK nominated their home towns to compete for the official status and a celebratory, magical, Disney twinning party.

Rebecca’s entry, a video slideshow with original poem, beat the 24 other shortlisted entries which nominated towns such as Blackpool, Aberdeen, Chester, Milton Keynes and Wigan.

The winning entry was selected by a team of judges, including TV star, Angellica Bell, Vice President Creative Inc, Walt Disney World, Duncan Wardle, Vice President and managing director of Disney Destinations International UK, Hugh Wood, and one of the famous Walt Disney Imagineers, Patrick Brennan.

Rebecca's video entry was selected for its creativity, sense of fun and the way in which it showcases the elements of Swindon that reflect key aspects of the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
