Recognising the armed forces
Swindon honour Armed Forces veterans in a special ceremony at Wharf Green
Swindon Town Centre honoured Armed Forces veterans today in a special ceremony at Wharf Green.
The ceremony is part of a week of activities promoted by inSwindon in the build-up to national Armed Forces Day (Saturday, 26th June), which also includes a Family Funday at Faringdon Road Park and a Military Parade.
The badge ceremony saw veterans across the Borough of Swindon receive their badge presented by the Mayor of Swindon, plus they received a bottle of a commemorative beer, brewed specially for Armed Services Week by Swindon’s local brewers Arkell’s.
“inSwindon is pleased with the great uptake on veterans registering this year and would like to thank those that are taking part," commented Simon Jackson, chief executive of inSwindon.
"We have doubled our applicants from last year and shows the commitment Swindon have in supporting events such as these. The reason we run these types of events for Armed Forces Week is to celebrate the contribution servicemen and women have made to the forces.
"The badge ceremony is one of the ways that we recognise this contribution made by veterans in the week leading up to Armed Forces Day. We are delighted to run this event again and provide opportunities for local people to show their support for the Armed Forces.”
