Home cooking at its best!

Why we recommend The Crown in Shrivenham

The minute I walked into the Crown in Shrivenham the smell of home cooked food filled the air and I immediately knew I was on to a winner – but to have the licencee, Wendy, greet me with the warmest welcome I instantly knew I liked this place.

Set in the heart of Shrivenham village, the Crown is decorated in a contemporary but almost rustic way, with a lovely log fire for those colder evening.

  Fine dining:
Wendy Kent & Phil Kent at the The Crown in Shrivenham

The tables remain un-laid to provide customers with a relaxed and informal dining experience. Run as a family business, Wendy plays the front of house role, her husband Brian as bar manager and their son Phil as head chef, with their aim ‘to provide real homemade food at an honest price.’

The food is described as classically British, using locally sourced produce. The menu offer meals like stek and hooky pie  (with the
pasrty top cooked from fresh) to slow roasted Cotswold belly pork with crackling, sweet and sour stir fry vegetables and creamy mash (£11.95) - and you can’t forget the old favourites like fish and chips (£10.95) and Cumberland sausages, creamy mash and red onion gravy (£10.95).

To start they had dishes on offer like their pic'n'mix board with selections of cheese, meat and fish to choose from (£2 per item), to there prawn and crayfish tails on mixed leaves finished with saffron mayonnaise (£6.50) - a meal the couple sitting next to me said was worth visiting The Crown for alone.

To compliment the tasty looking menu there was also a specials board with a number of local and seasonal dishes that change on a regular basis.

When speaking to Wendy about the new business, that opened in early March this year, she said she was delighted with the feedback they had received so far.

“We all love meeting people, so it’s been great getting to know the locals.

“We’ve all got catering backgrounds so when the opportunity came along to own the Crown we jumped at the chance. We can fit 32-34 covers in the main restaurant, but outside we have a function room that can fit parties from 16-20.

“Booking isn’t necessary but we recommend it as we don’t like turning customers away.”

The wine is provided from the Oxford Wine company and the beer from Hook Norton with a guest ale which changes regularly.

The restaurant is only 10 minutes from Swindon and opened from Tuesday to Saturday 10am-2.30pm and 6-close and on Sunday's 10 until after lunch service.

The family also offer outside catering for weddings, birthday parties, and anniversary’s and are always willing to come up with a menu to suit your needs.

So whether you fancy a glass of wine in their beautiful beer garden to a traditional home cooked meal in their intimate restaurant I recommend the Crown in Shrivenham.
