Swindon Invincible now moves to M.E.C.A
We reported a few months back on the latest plans for Swindon Invincible 2011, and after a storming weekend last year at The Bowl in Old Town, we were surprised (but excited) about the venue change to Lydiard Park. It would appear that those plans have once again changed, and the event will now be taking place at Swindon MECA.
A statement released by the promoters cites the event move to an indoor venue "due to the economic climate", although some speculation dwells on a low number of pre-event ticket sales. With that in mind, and the decision already made to scale down the event, the promoters still promise "an amazing night of great dance music" for all involved in the festival.
We are yet to be informed of the full details for the latest amendments to the festival arrangements, although sources close to the planning inform us that the event will take place on the evening of Saturday 20th August, continuing through until the early hours of the morning. Speculation has already begun on which of the acts booked for the festival will make the bill for the evening, but it is not expected that all artists will.
Over the last couple of years, Swindon Invincible has built up a solid reputation across the South-West, and particularly with fans of dance music, to be one of the most bespoke and unique summer events.
Some fans were unhappy with venue change, but we understand that this particular issue was out of the hands of the promoters. Reaction to the latest announcement has been mixed, and many have taken to social networking sites to voice their opinions.
On Facebook, one Swindon resident writes: "Get a grip Swindon, buy tickets earlier!!!!" to which a local DJ responds "I haven't bought my ticket yet... I must be to blame? That's nonsense". Activity of Twitter has also been rife with both positive and negative thoughts, and some who are of the opinion that it doesn't matter where the festival is held or with what line up, tweeting "I don't know why everyone is crying about it?". Although initial backlash would appear to be of a negative opinion, some users are looking at the latest set of changes as a positive thing, being happier that the event is now closer to the centre of the town, with a wider range of transport links.
Last year
The festival was headlined last year by BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe, and this year had the promoters putting on another jam-packed line-up with Leftfield, Krafty Kuts, Brand New Heavies, James Zabiela, Featurecast, a whole range of Valve Soundsystem DJ's, plus many more.
The festival promoters have stipulated that all those who have bought a ticket to this year's event should hold on to their tickets for the next week or so, until they announce their full plans of exchanging tickets to the MECA event.
They have also confirmed that there will be an option to receive a full refund of the face value of the ticket if they do not wish to take up the exchange offer. Full details of this process are also to follow, and we will announce SwindonWeb reader's on the new arrangements as soon as we have word from the promoters of Swindon Invincible 2011.
