Fatal Crash On A419

Friends and family gather for lantern tribute in Town Gardens

UPDATE: 9.00pm

Over a hundred friends and family gathered in Old Town to pay tribute to Shaya Rae Leigh & Kerry Stanford this evening.

Lanterns were lit and released in Town Gardens to remember the two teenage victims of this morning's car crash on the A419 and to support the three male survivors who are still being treated in hospital with serious injuries.

Flowers have also being layed at the crash site near the White Hart roundabout, although Wiltshire Police are politely advising well-wishers to refrain from doing so because of the dangers of traffic on the adjacent dual-carriageway.

The driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was 18-year-old Shaya Rae Leigh of Reading Street, Swindon.

A female passenger, 17-year-old Kerry Staniford, of Albion Street, Swindon, died later at Great Western Hospital, Swindon.

Three male passengers survived and are still in hospital being treated for their injuries. It is understood one has undergone an emergency operation for a broken back and neck.

A Facebook tribute page has been set up for Kerry and Shaya, with friends planning to meet in Town Gardens tonight at 8pm to release lanterns in remembrance.

Police have announced that two of the male passengers are now described as being "very poorly" at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol. A third male is still being treated for his injuries at GWH.

The northbound carriageway of the A419 will be closed for the time being from the junction with the A420 to the Turnpike junction at Blunsdon while a thorough police investigation is conducted. The southbound carriageway remains open.

Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101 and ask for PC Kevin Fry of the Serious Collision Investigation Team.

Second early morning accident in a week

The accident is the second fatal crash on that stretch of the A419 inside a week, after a 20-year-old passenger died last Saturday morning in a collision near the Commonhead roundabout.

The teenage driver of the car that killed 19-year-old Costi Voulgaris in June last year was also jailed yesterday for dangerous driving.
