The Corn Exchange - Past & Future

A spectacular aerial look at the history & new plans for one of Swindon's most historic buildings - WATCH VIDEOS

In a new series of videos produced by Swindon Heritage magazine and SwindonWebTV, we'll be taking a look back at Swindon's proud history - and how it's shaping our future.

The Corn Exchange
One of Swindon's oldest - and neglected - buildings

Locarno Swindon
In conversation with Swindon historian Graham Carter and Corn Exchange development leader Steve Rosier - plus some unique aerial footage of Old Town itself - we explain the history of one of Swindon's most important buildings, now sadly neglected, and how plans are in place for it to be returned to centre stage once again.

Part I: The Past

A look back on the former Old Town Hall and Corn Exchange buildings (known locally as the Locarno), where until 1900 Swindon was run; its centre for trade & commerce since the 12th century.

But the coming of the railways in 1843 changed all that and by the 21st century, New Town was growing faster than Old and after power past on, its decline began. By the 1950s it was a dance hall known as The Locarno, before finally closing as a Bingo hall in the late 80s.

It's now in a derelict state following extensive fire damage in
2003 and 2004.

Part II: The Future

How once again the Corn Exchange may become the true heartbeat of Old Town

After years of planning rows and delays, finally a joint proposal between the key partners - the owners, Swindon Borough Council, Forward Swindon & English Heritage - have agreed on a masterplan to restore the Corn Exchange building and immediate area as a place to be proud of for living and working.
