Calling Purton!

Listed red phone box restored to former glory with wi-fi & mod cons (and, yes, a phone line!)

They are right up there with red London buses, fish & chips and The Beatles - the great British phone box.

And this one below has stood in Purton just outside Swindon since 1952, but sadly negelcted and vandalised in the last few years with the advent of the mobile phone and BT with their mind on other things.

Until now!

Today, North Wiltshire MP James Gray reopened the completely refurbished Purton Telephone Kiosk, which has been restored and revitalized through the cooperation of the Parish Council and local data communications company Lde Digitial Services.

SWTV went along to find out more.

Bringing it completely up-to-date and in the internet age the iconic booth now offers not just an phone line but also provides:

- passers by with high speed WiFi internet access
- send mobile phones a message welcoming people to the village
- provide a map of the village using a special information screen in the kiosk, as well as other information on the locality
- Give the world a little window on to the centre of the village through a village webcam in the kiosk
