Firefighters were called at 5.51pm and found a thousand tonnes of general waste well alight, with large amounts of black smoke hugely visible across town. A skip lorry and various pieces of machinery were also affected by the heat with explosions heard.

As of 7.00pm, there were five fire crews in attendance including those from Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade, Marlborough, Malmesbury and nearby Stratton, despite some local stations being on 'strike' as part of a day of industrial action.

Despite difficult access, the adjacent storage site for gas cylinders was protected as a priority. Local people have been advised to keep doors and windows closed if they are concerned about the plume, especially if they have a pre-existing respiratory condition.
