Over 540 students from New College were smiling this morning as they secured their place at University on the annual A Level results day.

Many chose the traditional way of finding out their grades, as opposed to going online, by turning up to get their exam results bright and early at 8.30am.

New College A Level Results 2014

New College has the largest number of A-level learners in Swindon and Wiltshire.

The number of successful A Level entries in 2014 was 1631 (up from 1556 last year) with a pass rate of 97%.

The percentage of students achieving A*, A or B grades was 39%, with 4% of students achieving an A* grade and 21 students achieving 3 A grades or more, an outstanding achievement.

There was also an increase in the number of subjects in which 16-18 students achieved a perfect 100% pass. 43 out of 58 subjects had a 100% pass rate, compared with 39 subjects out of 55 in 2013.

These were: Accounting, Anthropology, Applied Business, Archaeology, Art & Design, Fine Art, Textiles, Classical Civilisation, Communications Studies, Drama and Theatre Studies, Dutch, Electronics, English Language, English Language and Literature, English Literature, Environmental Science, Film Studies, French, Further Maths, Geography, German, Graphic Design, History (European & British 20th Century), History (American & British 20th Century), History (Tudors and Stuarts), History of Art, Human Biology, Italian, Law, Media Studies, Music, Music Technology, Philosophy, Polish, Psychology, Religious Studies, Russian, Science, Sociology, Spanish, Travel & Tourism, Use of Maths and World Development.

Maths & English

With the Government’s increasing emphasis on English and Maths, backed by employer organisations like the Confederation of British Industry and Institute of Directors, 138 students passed English subjects, and 205 passed Maths subjects.

Star student, Harry Jones received five A* grades in in Biology, Chemistry, Further Maths, Physics and Extended Project Qualification.

Harry will be going to the University of Cambridge to read Natural Sciences for a four-year masters degree, specialising in Physics. Thomas Penfold has achieved four A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

Adults pass rate 94%

Many adult students (those aged 19+) also choose to take their A Levels at New College when returning to education, often after several years. 19+ students achieved a great pass rate of 94%.

320 New College students are also celebrating their BTEC Diploma results today; an increase on last year’s 212 students. They achieved a 100% pass rate, with 31% gaining distinctions.

The BTEC Diploma is equivalent to 3 A levels, and a distinction is equivalent to top A level grades.

In all, there were 959 entries for Level 3 vocational studies who have gained work-ready qualifications in areas such as IT, Computer Games, Medical Science, Creative & Media, Sport, Public Services, Health & Social Care, Child Care, Hospitality, Travel & Tourism and Beauty Therapy.

Many of these young learners have worked part-time whilst at New College and have picked up the skills and work ethic that employers are demanding through participation in activities such as employability courses, business mentoring and the New College Job Club.

Last year 521 New College students gained places at university and other higher education destinations and this year hopes are high for the record to be broken with 658 students having already applied.

Largest choice of courses in Wiltshire

New College offers a range of higher education courses – degrees, foundation degrees and HNDs as well as Apprenticeship courses, and will be offering 65 different courses from September 2014.
