Meet 'Graeme' the Swan! 

UPDATE 9.07am: Injured Graeme taken to Swan Sanctuary

 

Thanks to Jacky Clark on Facebook for this update on Graeme the friendly swan at Waitrose.

 

'Graeme has been caught this morning by helpers and taken to the Swan Sanctuary where he was found to have an injured wing possibly a fox or dog bite but more seriously he had fishing line tangled all around his bottom beak which if it had been left untreated would have resulted in him at the least losing that beak. The other two cygnets will hopefully be caught also as there are no adults with them and they are too young to be on their own.'

He's a lonely star at Waitrose in Wichelstowe

But the only problem is.... we aren't quite sure if he's a HIM or a HER?

Shoppers at Waitrose in Swindon now have someone quite unusual doing the friendly meeting, greeting and goodbyes - 'Graeme' the young swan.

 

The grown-up cygnet has become quite a star recently as he ventures from his home on the adjacent Wilts & Berks Canal to say hello as people arrive and depart, like us today, from the new supermarket in Wichelstowe.

 

We fear, however, that Graeme's mum and dad have flown off leaving this lonely 'ugly duckling' on his own'y own. Hence his need for a bit of attention!

 

 

And seeing that Waitrose sponsor the national English cricket team, we thought it a good idea to call him 'Graeme' - after the famous spinner.

 

The only problem being, he - Graeme - could actually turn out to be a female!

 

So ornithology assistance is needed. How can you tell the sex of a young swan? We need to know!
