Children ‘wheely’ pleased with new Covingham Drive pedestrian-cycle route

 

School children have given the thumbs up to a new pedestrian-cycle link on the northern verge of Covingham Drive.

 

Pupils from Colebrook Junior School joined officers from Swindon Borough Council’s Transport Planning and Project Delivery teams and representatives from contractor Volker Highways yesterday (27 April) to officially declare the new route open.

 

 

Walkers and cyclists have already been making good use of the new pedestrian-cycle route, which is a high quality addition to the Swindon Urban and Pedestrian Network and will connect the existing cycle facilities on Merlin Way and Dorcan Way.

 

The new cycle route will also provide future pedestrian and cycle connections to the new Eastern Villages development area.

 

Lynsey Turner, Swindon Borough Council’s Transport Project Manager, said: “We have received some really positive feedback on the new route and it is already being well used.

 

“We already have some excellent pedestrian and cycle routes in Swindon and the new Covingham Drive link will not only benefit existing residents, it will connect communities in the New Eastern Villages in the years to come.”

 

 

Rob Morris, Deputy Headteacher at Coleview Junior School, said: “From the school’s point of view the timing of the new cycle path is perfect. It has arrived at a time when we are working hard to encourage the children to cycle and scoot to school instead of travelling by car.

 

“Many children are already using the cycle path, not only as a means of getting to school, but also as a safe route to friends’ houses when out playing or with their parents when out cycling and running.”
