Melinda welcomes families to reading event

Swindon's super mum:
Melinda meets local families
Melinda Messenger, Swindon's own celebrity mum, welcomed under fives and their parents and carers to a free funtime family morning at West Swindon Library.

The event was held to celebrate a national books-for-babies programme called 'Bookstart' which aims to get children interested in books from an early age.

The library was filled with the sound of happy singing as the toddlers and their parents and carers sang rhymes to mark National Bookstart Day. The rhymes were sung simultaneously in libraries across the country to commemorate the day.

"Reading is an excellent way to spend time with you children," said Melinda, who enjoys reading with her three children.

She offered her support to the event, saying: "Anything that encourages children to read is brilliant, the 'Bookstart' scheme is a fantastic idea."

During the morning over one hundred families received a free 'Bookstart Plus' pack sponsored by the Swindon Learning Partnership.

The packs contained storybooks, crayons and drawing pads, activities, and advice for parents to get their children involved in books.

New TV programme

During a brief interview with SwindonWeb, the 33-year-old also took the opportunity to tell us that although a lot of her recent work has been involved with children, in her next project she has been transformed into a 65-year-old pensioner!

"It is a brand-new programme for Channel 5, called 'Age Swap',"

"Myself and some other celebrities have been dressed up so that we can experience first-hand what it is like to be an old person in the country today.

"You will have to wait and see when the programme goes out, but the make-up artists added thirty years on me and even some of my closest friends were fooled."

"It's the wierdest thing I've ever done," Melinda added.

The show is due to be aired in November, but before then Swindon's golden girl can still be seen regularly as a presenter of the BBC's Sunday morning programme 'Heaven and Earth'.
