New Arkell's mild gets real ale fans' seal of approval

It was dream evening for real ale fans in Swindon last night, with the launch of a new spring beer by Arkell's Brewery.

To coincide with cask ale week, the Kingsdown brewery invited 40 CAMRA members from nine groups across the South West to sample their Maypole Mild, a traditional mild ale which Arkell’s brewed for the first time last year.

And the beer, which is dark in colour and delicately hopped with English Fuggles from nearby Kingston Bagpuize in Oxfordshire, definitely went down a treat (see video above).

"My first ever taste of beer was Arkell’s Mash Tun Mild in 1988, at the Sally Puseys Inn when they were having a special tasting session, and whilst I have to say that that was my absolute favourite, probably because you’ll never be able to have a first taste of beer twice, it's a great beer,” said Gill White from Swindon CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale)

Those attending were also given the opportunity to take a tour of brewery itself, one of the last examples of a Victorian steam brewery in the UK.

Maypole Mild is being sold in all Arkell’s managed houses and many of its tenanted pubs from 6th April at from £2.50 per pint.
