Up for the challenge?

Library service issues reading challenge to Swindon’s bookworms

Swindon’s library service is inviting people across the borough to take part in the Six Book Challenge next year.

The Six Book Challenge invites less confident readers to read six books and record their progress in a diary.

People taking part in the challenge will be supported with incentives and rewarded with a certificate at the end.

Last year 80 people in Swindon took up the challenge, but Swindon Borough Council’s library team want to hear from even more people and are targeting companies as well as educational establishments.

Of those that took part in the challenge last year, 90% said they felt more confident about reading, while 80% said they expected to use a library more often to borrow books.

Tutors said the challenge improved learners’ confidence, increased their motivation and helped them to develop a reading habit.

The challenge is free to all library users, while the library service will of course provide all the materials required.

Cllr Fionuala Foley, Cabinet Member for Local Environment and Corporate Affairs, said: “The Six Book Challenge is a great excuse for people to visit their local library, while at the same time taking part in an enjoyable pastime.

“The challenge has helped many people to pick up the reading habit and I would urge as many people as possible to take part next year.”
