Romford's Danny Marshall scored the equaliser and then with just 4 minutes remaining of the first period Romford scored again to put Raiders ahead going into the period break.
Swindon resumed play in the second period much the same as the first, both physical and determined.
Head coach Ryan Aldridge netted an early equaliser less than a minute into the period and goals through Aaron Nell and John Wheaton put Cats ahead with just 5 minutes of the second period remaining.
A scuffle in front of the away goal turned into a fight which saw Nicky Watt ejected from the game.
This looked to be a turning point for Swindon and sloppy defending allowed Romford to score 2 goals in 2 minutes to tie the score making the third and final period an exciting one with all to play for.
It was Romford who went ahead just 2 minutes into the period and although Swindon threw everything they had at the vistors, they were unable to get past Romford's keeper Carl Ambler who was on top form.
Romford then extended their lead with only 3 minutes remaining of the match to make the fianl score 4 - 6 to the visitors.
