Swindon St George 4 Southampton Spitfires 30

In a performance that showed a growing awareness of the technicalities of Rugby League - Swindon held their more experienced opponents to a much tighter score line than the final tallies in their first two encounters.

“The Southampton coach came to watch our game against Coventry two weeks ago” said Coach Geoff Norris.

“And their coach told me that the difference in our performance between now and then is phenomenal.”

St George have been working on their fitness levels after conceding a lot of points in the latter half of their games.

Woody Briggs was the try scorer for Swindon, using his power and upper body strength to make the breakthrough. Another positive for the home side is the ever growing player roster, and Norris points to the number of youngsters at the club as being particularly pleasing.

“At one point today we had no less than four players on the field who were under eighteen years of age and the enthusiasm they showed gives me great hope,” adding “I can feel our first victory is not so far away now.”

Next up for the Saints is a local derby at Oxford and for Norris, former coach of the Cavaliers, Swindon’s debut victory in that one would be extra special.
