Celebrate National Apple Day
The history, cultivation and uses of apples to be celebrated at Lydiard Park to mark National Apple Day
![]() |
Swindon
Sunday 21 October
The gardening team at the Swindon Borough Council-owned park will be on hand to provide guided walks to explain how apples were grown in the historic Walled Garden.
Built in the 1740s, the Walled Garden was used to grow flowers and fruit and to provide a pleasant place for the aristocratic St John family to stroll after dinner.
The garden is an elegant flower garden with narrow beds and wide gravel paths. Along the walls and along the centre of the flowerbeds are trained apple, pear, greengage, peach, plum, cherry, apricot and fig trees.
The garden contains many different varieties of apple trees including rare English varieties including Bedwyn Beauty, Ribston Pippin, Colonel Vaughan and London Pippin.
The guided walks will give information on the history of apples and how historically appropriate varieties have been reintroduced. There will also be opportunities to taste some apples grown in the garden.
The guided talks on Sunday will take place at 11am and 2pm and the cost is £6 per person.
Places can be booked by calling Lydiard Park on 01793 770401 or by emailing: lydiardpark@swindon.gov.uk
