The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (15)
Swindon Film Festival 2011THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE
UK - 1969 - English - Drama
An early lead performance from Dame Maggie Smith.
In this film based on the novel by Muriel Spark, she stars as the titular Edinburgh schoolmistress who nurtures her young charges in a very flamboyant style:
“ all my pupils are the crème de la crème. Give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life.”
Presenting life as one long romantic adventure, she is ultimately betrayed by one of her pupils.
“ Maggie Smith is handed a part in the eccentric, trite, purposeful and finally pathetic Jean Brodie which allows her to play to all her considerable strengths” (Time Out)
** Maggie Smith won the ‘Best Actress’ Academy Award in 1969 for her lead role **
