Madeleine Bunting, author and leading columnist for The Guardian, looked closely at an acre of land in the middle of nowhere, which had been her father’s home.

The result is The Plot, her latest book, which not only paints a particular portrait of England but also addresses questions of belonging, and discovers that real and valued ownership may well be more about time, life, and commitment than simple possession.
