White collar fight night at Liquid & Envy on Easter weekend

Phill Day made a triumphant return to the ring after a seven-year absence when he extinguished the challenge of Paddy Teehan inside two rounds in the main event at the Neilson Promotions White Collar Fight Night, held at the Liquid Night Club.

The veteran of 19 professional fights – along with a further 60 contests as an amateur in Walcot colours – showed no sign of any ring rust. Landing single shots to head and body, Day kept his southpaw rival on the back foot from the bell and coasted through the opening round of this cruiserweight clash.

Shortly into the second session, the 35 year-old Swindonian landed an awesome left under the rib cage and Teehan fell to his knees. The towel was swiftly flung in as the corner retired their man and Day’s triumphant return was confirmed.

Hurvin Morgan also rolled back the years - almost two decades after his last outing as a professional – when he tackled former British and European kick-boxing champion Simon Belletti in the bout of the night.

Both possessed versatility in their punching and were stylish in their delivery, but it was Morgan’s edge on accuracy that swung the verdict in his direction. Kev Dawson claimed the best boxer award after outpointing Ian Cleaver on his ring debut.

But he had to come from behind in this heavyweight clash and his greater precision in the final two sessions was enough to clinch the decision. Dan Blackwell got the nod over Dan Phelps after an absorbing light middleweight clash during which there was little to split the pair.

Former Penhill amateur Darren Lee proved too powerful for Lewis Irons in their welterweight encounter. An unanswered four-punch combination from the Swindonian made his rival wobble with the towel arriving before referee Ricky Porter could start the count.

Sam Lee also saw his arm raised in triumph after a better jab proved decisive against Deon Jarvis in their middleweight encounter.

Paul Payne’s extra height and reach proved decisive in the final half of the contest to get the nod over Jamie Horn after their super middleweight clash.

Two left hands from Waldemar Gawin upended Dan Hart in the opening round of their light heavyweight clash and the same weapon imposed another count in the final round as the Pole romped to victory. Luke Boswell rallied strongly in the second half of his cruiserweight clash to get the nod over Terry Quelch.

Little separated Dave Levett and southpaw rival Muri Balogun and a draw was a fair relection of their light heavyweight encounter.

And Mr Porter came to the same conclusion from the night’s super middleweight opener involving James Fisher and Richie Hall.

Denis Jones and Luke Martin waded into to each other from the start, but this battle ended prematurely – Jones winced in agony as he threw a left hook and was forced to retire as the opener drew to a close.
