Ian Leslie at the Arts Centre

On lying, fibbing, fantasies, and maybe the truth

Arts Centre
Swindon
Thursday 17 May 2012

Ian Leslie Swindon Festival of Literature
Do we live in a world of lies, in advertising, politics, careers, sport, and love affairs?

If lying is wrong, why do we all do it, either a little bit or a lot, both to others, and to ourselves?

Why are our attitudes to lying so confused, contradictory, and even, self-deceiving? Is there such a thing as lying to get nearer to the truth?

In his book Born Liars, which was a Radio 4 Book of the Week (honestly) author Ian Leslie, who has written for The Economist, The Times, the Guardian, and Granta (true) explains that, far from being a bug in the human software, lying is central to who we are; and that we cannot know ourselves without first understanding the dynamics of deceit.
