The Snail And The Whale

Our mum about town Kelly Jobanputra watches as a children's storybook comes to life at The Wyvern Theatre - REVIEW

Wyvern Theatre, Swindon
Tuesday 07 April - Wednesday 08 April 2015

Tall Stories (creators of the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom stage shows) are proud to present their latest collaboration with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

A tiny snail longs to see the world, so she hitches a lift on the tail of a huge humpback whale.

Created in Tall Stories’ unique style, The Snail and the Whale combines physical storytelling, live music and lots of laughs – for everyone aged 4 and up.

Review of The Snail And The Whale
By Kelly Jobanputra

It’s great to see a storybook come to life and ‘The Snail and the Whale’ show at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon helped to prove that.

Children squealed with delight at several points throughout this show, which follows a tiny snail as she hitches a lift on the tail of a humpback whale so she can see the world.

But as anyone who has read the book knows, the whale ends up getting beached and it’s up to the snail to save him.

The show flipped between narration, which included all the lines from the book, and the two well know characters from the tale – the little girl and her dad.

Throughout the show there was live music with fantastic lighting and props, and most of the children seemed to be fully engaged.

However, it would appear that the show, despite being billed as being for 4 years and upwards, won’t necessarily hold the attention span of people that young.

There were a few children who got a bit restless at some points, including my daughter, but not to the point where there were any tears.

The interaction really got the children excited and was enough to reel them back in when their minds wandered.

This show was put on by Tall Stories (creators of the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom stage shows) and was collaborated with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

It will be great to see what else they will bring to Swindon.
