Walk Among The Fritillaries

The chance to enjoy a springtime wonder here in Swindon

 

The springtime display of wild snakeshead fritillaries in Cricklade is one of England’s true wildlife spectacles.

 

So why not head out this month to North Meadow where they grow and take a walk among one of Britain's most beautiful and nationally scarce flowers.

 

 

You'll find around 80% per cent of Britain’s snake’s head fritillaries - named after the shape of the flower bud before it opens and the snakeskin pattern - in Cricklade's lowland hay meadow plus many more great varieties of wildflowers.

 

Plus, for those interested in World War Two, you'll be able to see some of the wartime defences built in the meadow to deter glider landing in the event of a German invasion.

 

 

 

All in all a fascinating place to enjoy an afternoon stroll for young and old.

 

The National Nature Reserve is open to the public at all times.
