A Review of Chuckles Comedy Club
by Kelly Jobanputra

The MECA in Swindon was full of laughter last night (25 August 2016) during the Chuckles Comedy Club because quite simply, the two acts and the compere were so hilarious it was hard to catch a breath.

Having never been to this night, which is put on every last Thursday of the month, I really wasn't sure what to expect in terms of the quality of the performers. But now I have been once, I have to admit that I am hooked.

My husband Vik, who can be a hard one to please when it comes to comedy, enjoyed the night just as much as me and said "this is just what Swindon needs. A regular night where you can have a laugh and a pint!"

It all started with compere extraordinaire Kevin McCarthy, who apparently has quite a following in the comedy circuit and I can totally see why. He's quick witted, engaging and has a larger than life stage presence. (I don't mean fat Kev!).

He got the crowd, which was a busy one, warmed up to the right level in order to make way for the first act of the evening - the gentleman that is Earl Okin.

Now, I can't say enough good things about Earl. He is definitely one of a kind! He is an all round performer who can not only make you laugh with his songs and play a guitar perfectly - he also imitates all kinds of instruments using just his mouth. And by his own admission, he is an irresistible sex symbol.

Unfortunately, the sound on his mic went in the first 10 minutes of his set but this did not deter Earl. He carried on like the professional that he clearly is and projected his voice until the speakers came back to life.

He sang about wanting women to come back to his room, did a very unique version of 'Teenage Dirtbag' by Wheatus and treated us to some country/western and blues music.

You know it's a good performance when you don't want the act to leave the stage, but compere Kevin delighted the crowd again with his banter.

After the interval, we were treated to Irish comedian Keith Farnan - who by the way, cannot stand his first name. I mean, as he said, who calls a baby Keith anyway? That's just cruel.

He covered many subjects, including Brexit and the role of a father, but the real memorable parts of his set were when a, he destroyed a heckler with sheer brilliance and b, he fell off the stage just after he said he didn't believe in God. He couldn't have timed that better but the way he dealt with his genuine stumble was impressive. (Keith, you did say that would stick in people's heads and no doubt you were right. But don't worry - it's all positive.)

The evening from start to finish, was the perfect length as it left you wanting more and intrigued enough to want to come back on the next comedy night.

So come on Swindon, support this fantastic comedic evening and help raise the profile of this diverse venue that is a hidden gem in the town.

After all, laughter is the best medicine.
