Hairspray

Kelly Jobanputra's take on the annual Swindon Summer Youth Project production

Wyvern Theatre, Swindon
Thursday 20 August - Sunday 23 August 2015

Massive hair, large dresses and even bigger personalities.

You would be hard pushed to know the difference between the Summer Youth Project’s version of Hairspray from the actual Broadway musical.

The cast were so very talented that it honestly made you very proud to have them representing our town.

It is unbelievable that the show was put together in just two weeks as no one missed a beat and it was extremely polished from start to finish.

The night started with many of the cast, complete in their 60s style attire, dancing in the aisles next to the audience and this really made you get into the party spirit.

The main part of Tracy Turnblad was played by Kerrie Scarff, who was absolutely sensational. Her voice had such an impressive vocal range and her character was hilarious in all the right places.

Another shining star in the cast was Georgina Hendry, who played the goffy sibling role of Edna Turnblad.

Local young actor Carli Green, who played the part of Seaweed, had a truly outstanding voice and mesmerising presence.

The variety of songs, including ‘Welcome to the 60s’ and ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’, were all very catchy numbers and seemed to stick inside your head regardless of whether you had seen the film or not.
Much of the packed audience gave a standing ovation at the end and looked thoroughly pleased with the evening’s entertainment.

It will be very hard to top this show with next year’s Summer Youth Project, but it will be great to see everyone try.
