Things To Do In Swindon
A packed audience at the Wyvern Theatre were delighted by flying people, foam bricks and escaped gorillas on Tuesday night (5th December) when this year's Christmas panto of Peter Pan took to the stage.

Having been to this annual festive treat at our local theatre for many years in a row, I can honestly say that the 2017 pantomime is the best I have seen by far; everything about it was splendid and to see my daughter's face light up with happiness was priceless.

Soap legend Adam Woodyatt returned to the Wyvern (after performing there in 1989 and then 2015) and he got a massive cheer when he first walked onto the stage as Mr Darling (as well as hearty boos when he became Captain Hook). I was very impressed with the ease at which he took to the stage as just because you're an actor on the screen, doesn't mean you translate well in the theatre - in his case however, he was fantastic.

My favourite performer though was Smee (played by Antony Lawrence) as he was hilarious from start to finish; we all loved his comical actions and his broad Bristol accent. In fact the scene where he sang '12 days of Christmas' was genius and had everyone in the audience, regardless of age, in stitches.

I also enjoyed the part of Tinkerbell (performed by Abigail Matthews) as she had a lot of gusto! I liked the way she commanded your attention when she was on the stage and her attitude towards Wendy was very amusing.

Although Peter Pan is an old tale, there were plenty of modern songs chucked in - such as hits by Take That and Katy Perry. These numbers, as well as the references to Swindon, kept us all gripped with what was happening on the stage in front of us.

The beautiful sets, the lights, the bangs, the swashbuckling pirates, the items that we were asked to throw at Captain Hook - all made this a wonderful family experience and I recommend grabbing tickets so you can join this adventure in Neverland.

(Relaxed performances are available - just call the ticket office on 01793 524481.)

The Swindon panto is on at the Wyvern until 31 December 2017.
