Ahir Shah

We catch up with one of the UK's brightest comedians ahead of his Arts Centre appearance

Saturday, 10 Feb 2018
Arts Centre, Old Town

The hilarious and clever comedian Ahir Shah is returning to Swindon for a gig on the 10th February and our 'mum about town' Kelly Jobanputra (who has seen him perform live before) interviewed him for SwindonWeb...

Ahih Shah comedian

Kel: You're coming to Swindon on the 10th of February, you had a great reception when you were here last year (I saw the gig - loved it) what can we expect this time around?

AS: The show I brought round last time was called MACHINES, and was about how I felt like the world was on a precipice balanced between a potential brighter future and the resurgent reactionary worst of the past.

The new show, CONTROL, is about those political moments over the last couple of years that seemed to indicate that the past was winning.

Kel: What is life really like as a touring comedian? And how do you chill out?

AS: You gain an astonishingly in-depth knowledge of the vagaries of the British train network, and learn quickly how to maximise the value of a Boots Meal Deal!

I chill out by napping and attempting to avoid the news.

Kel: When did you first realise you were funny and should be a comedian? What's the story?!

AS: I realised that, for better or for worse, I have a grand total of one marketable skill. I'm not the funniest person I know. I'm not the funniest person in my family.

Kel: What would be your advice to other people who want to try and become a comedian?

AS: The entirety of the British comedy industry revolves around the Edinburgh Fringe; much of the Edinburgh Fringe revolves around performers getting into ridiculous levels of debt.

Enjoy the former bit, and avoid getting caught up in the latter.

Kel: How do you deal with hecklers?

AS: With fire and fury like the world has never seen.

Kel: Do you have any Swindon stories of when you have visited in the past?

AS: I, like all those who have visited Swindon, have too many tales to fit into anything less than a multi-volume novel.

Kel: Who is your favourite comedian and why?

AS: Richard Pryor, which I suppose is a relatively boring suggestion because he was just so much better at stand-up than anyone else who has ever done it. It's like pointing out that Don Bradman was quite a good batsman.
