World Book Day

Reading challenge participants to mark World Book Day

Literary lovers are being invited to swap notes on the Six Book Challenge at a special evening to mark World Book Day.

The Six Book Challenge invites less confident readers to read six books and record their reading in a diary.

Swindon Borough Council’s Library Service is inviting all those taking part in the challenge to attend a coffee evening at the Central Library’s café to talk about their progress. The coffee evening will be held on Thursday from 7pm.

Library staff will be on hand to give advice or guidance on what to read next and the library’s 10 brand new Quick Reads will also be available for people to borrow.

Quick Reads are bite-sized books by bestselling writers and celebrities. They are ideal for regular readers wanting a short, fast read, and for those who have lost the reading habit or find reading tough.

The Six Book Challenge also gives readers the chance to pick up goodies when returning books including pens, key rings and vouchers for free DVD rentals.

For those that complete the Challenge there is also the chance to win even better prizes such as book tokens and entry into a national prize draw.

Cllr Fionuala Foley, Cabinet Member for Local Environment and Corporate Affairs, said: “The Six Book Challenge is a great initiative and I know it is proving to be a big hit with people who want to pick up the reading habit.

“The coffee evening is a great way for those taking part in the challenge to meet new friends and talk about the books they are reading.”

The reading challenge is a national initiative run by the Reading Agency.
