David Constantine and Stuart Evers

DAVID CONSTANTINE and STUART EVERS – on the agony, art, and joy of writing and reading short stories.

What is the most popular form of creative prose writing, outside journalism?

The short story.

What is one of the toughest tasks in writing prose?

Writing less, that is good.

In short, short stories.

From an entry of more than 150,000, last year’s BBC National Short Story Award was won by a story about a relationship foundering over a squabble in a seaside hotel.

The judges deemed it ‘remarkable for the economy with which the story was created’.

Its author, David Constantine, is a published poet, translator, and tutor in language and Literature. His latest collection of short stories, published by Comma Press, is The Shieling.

Stuart Evers writes about books for reputable publications, has had fiction appear in modern magazines, and is newly-published by Picador in Ten Stories About Smoking, one of which is set in Swindon!

N.B. David and Stuart will appear as judges in the Short Story Competition later this same evening.

Tickets - £6 (£5)
