Avenue Q

SWTV: Avenue Q at the Wyvern Theatre

You've probably heard of Sesame Street, but it was the stars of Avenue Q taking centre stage this month

Created by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (co-creator of Book of Mormon and writer of the songs for Disney’s Frozen), this irresistibly charming musical tells the story of the loveable characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues.

Hilarious, cheeky and uproariously entertaining, the show is running at the Wyvern Theatre until Saturday 18th July.

Review of Avenue Q
By Kelly Jobanputra

Imagine every taboo subject under the sun being tackled through the use of song by a bunch of muppets. That’s what the production Avenue Q is all about and last night it was performed to a full house at the Wyvern Theatre (Tuesday 14th July).

If you have never seen it before, then you are in for a wild treat. It’s a no holds barred piece of theatre which will leave you highly amused and slightly shocked at the same time.

The show’s banner screams ‘Caution! Not suitable for little monsters’ and it couldn’t be more right. These are not the sort of cute furry little muppets that you might remember from when you used to watch Sesame Street as a kid.

With no Big Bird in sight, you will be taken through an experience of what it is like to live on Avenue Q (a neighbourhood you really don’t want to walk through late at night by yourself).

You will hear about porn and racism and you won’t hear about all things sweet and nice. But you will be surprised at how quick the night flies by, despite it starting at 7.30pm and going on until 10.

The characters of the Bad Idea Bears, Christmas Eve and Brian will all light up your night but it’s the love triangle between Kate Monster, Princeton and Lucy the Slut that will have you engrossed.

The only criticism has to be how hot the theatre was all night, making it at times a slightly uncomfortable viewing experience. Lots of people were using their programmes as fans during the show and everyone descended outside for fresh air during the interval. ( We were probably not as hot as the actors with furry muppets on their arms though!)

This production takes the concept of manually operated puppetry to a whole new adult level and the totally inappropriate songs will stick in your head all the way home.

A first class evening.

Avenue Q runs at the Wyvern Theatre until Saturday the 18th of July.
