Sprint king Linford Christie will be casting his eye over young Swindon sporting talent when his Street Athletics event returns to the town next week.

 

The free youth engagement programme, which has been organised by Swindon Borough Council and Nuff Respect, will be taking place outside Pine Trees Community Centre at The Circle in Pinehurst, on Thursday, 9 July and the former Olympic gold medallist will be on hand to watch young Swindon sprinters take part in a variety of races.

 

Street Athletics was first held in Swindon six years ago and is aimed at disengaged, disaffected young people aged under 20. It targets youngsters who are not engaged in mainstream sports and who can benefit from the confidence and motivation that comes from taking part in a positive community sports experience.

 

Four different age groups

 

The event will see young people tackle 60m sprints in four different age groups – U13s, U15s, U17s and U20s. It is hoped those competing will take inspiration from the event and take advantage of local sports clubs and sports facilities.

 

Registration for the races takes place on the day between 3pm and 4pm and under 18s will require the consent of parents or guardians on their registration forms. Races will run between 4pm and 5.30pm.

The winners of each age group will be invited to Manchester for the National Finals being held on September 26.
