Swindon Commemorates WW1

The town announces plans for a week of celebration and commemoration of the Great War

Swindon Town Centre
Monday 04 August - Saturday 09 August

With the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1 fast approaching, inSwindon BID Company alongside Swindon and the Great War have unveiled a number of events to both commemorate and celebrate The Great War.

The week beginning 4th August will feature various activities including a traditional street party, a school life and period games workshop, cooking, Music and Dance and a film festival! There will also be a World War 1 exhibition and a memorial wall on display all week.

Friday night will see an open air screening in Wharf Green of War Horse. As with all screenings on the big screen, you are encouraged to bring picnics, chairs and blankets! The film will commence at 7.00pm, and you can register your interest in this free event by emailing tickets@inswindon.com.

On Saturday 9th August Swindon will be throwing its very own street party to celebrate how far we have come since the war, with a selection of music and dance through the decades. 2 stages will be erected in Wharf Green and a number of great acts and classes have already been confirmed:

- Graham and Ann from Hoppin Mad
- Charleston dance class and performance
- Pheonix Players 1930s
- Nathan Jones All Star Jazz Band with Ballroom dancing
- Erica and Cliff
- Lindy hop dance class and performance 1950s
- Josie and the Outlaw

Stilt walkers, Marquees, Inflatables and more!

But that's not all! Also in Wharf Green on Saturday will be stilt walkers, a poppy colouring station and Ray’s Ice Cream who will be giving away taster ice cream throughout the times. You can also expect a series of Marquees with picnic tables, inflatables in Canal Walk, a Bread Making Workshop in theatre square, and a World War I British Army Recruitment Stand with weapons, posters, equipment and accessories for 1914, in the Parade.
