Experiences of Leading 3 Para

Former commander-turned author to relive Afghanistan mission at Central Library

 

The dangers of the war in Afghanistan will be the topic of discussion when a former soldier visits the Central Library this week.

Colonel Stuart Tootal will be talking about his new book Danger Close, which recounts his experience of leading 3 Para into the war ravaged Helmand region of Afghanistan.

Colonel Tootal is the first senior commander to provide an account of the war in Afghanistan and his book describes the essence of combat, the risks involved and the aftermath.

3 Para was the first unit into Helmand in 2006 and was originally sent on a peace mission, but soon became embroiled in combat.

 

A number of soldiers were honoured for their part in the battle, but Colonel Tootal resigned from the Army after becoming frustrated with the Government’s treatment of his soldiers who were wounded in combat.
