Robots do battle in Swindon
There was an exciting mix of fun, flipping and fighting at the STEAM museum in Swindon this weekend.
Over a thousand people turning up to watch and take part in a Robogeddon tournament - a ‘Robot Wars’-style entertainment show where 70kg robots flip other bots and right themselves in a specially constructed arena.
"It's been an absolutely brilliant day," said one thirteen-year-old, who enjoyed the thrill of crashing and slamming his robot into others during one five-minute contest. "I used to watch Robot Wars avidly on the TV, so it's great to get the chance to have a go myself."
Children and adults also got the opportunity to try out the new Robosoccer game - usually only available at Kevin Keegan's Soccer Circus in Glasgow - where up to four players can control high impact, 80 kg robots in a state-of-the-art soccer pitch. To add to the excitement, several daleks also made a special guest appearance and were seen darting around the Museum. And for those interested in designing and building robots, there was also the chance to quiz and ask questions of the robotic experts on-hand, as well take part in an educational workshop featuring a number of special motorised creations made of Lego. "After last year's success, we're delighted see some many people coming back to enjoy the event once again," said STEAM events manager, Ian Surtees. |
