Swindon Bike Week '09 

'Get more out of life - live local, get cycling'
 
Bike Week in Swindon
That's the message for National Bike Week, which takes place over the next few days, 13-21 June.
 
And with Swindon having a fantastic network of dedicated cycle routes in and around the town (see below for a map link), plus some fantastic countryside, there's no better time or place to quite literally get on yer' bike and explore.  
 
Starting with the Swindon Cycling Festival on Sunday. 
 
Swindon Cycling Festival
Sunday 14 June
Lydiard Park
  
Taking place between 10am and 4pm, visitors will be able to try out a range of bikes, find out about safe cycling, meet others interested in cycling, get a free bike check, and take part in cycling activities.

Full Programme of Events
 
There are a wide range of free events during Bike Week, ranging from cycle training and Dr Bike sessions for novices, to commuter challenges and group rides around local cycling routes.
 
Saturday 13 June
 
Commuter Buddy Ride from Coate Water
Start time: 10:00am
Distance: Approx 4 miles each way
Start from: Coate Water - main car park
Cost: Free
 
Description: A ride aimed at cyclists who would like to ride into Swindon Town Centre but don't know the safest way of getting there. This ride will be slow paced using off road paths and quiet side streets to demonstrate that cycle commuting can be pleasant and easy!
 
Other information: There's an opportunity to "pick up" people who live in the vicinity of Queens Drive along the way if you contact the ride leader. Free goody bag for all participants who pre-register by e-mail

Family Cycling Festival
10:00am – 4:00pm
Lydiard Park

Description: A cycling road show open to all. Come along and learn about cycling in the area and have a go on a wide selection of bikes and family cycling system on the Try Out track. There will be maps, routes, advice and even a free bike check available. Additionally, there will be free, guided cycle rides around Lydiard Park led by professional cycling instructors, and if there is demand, longer routes will also be available.

Description: A ride aimed at cyclists who would like to ride into Swindon Town Centre but don't know the safest way of getting there. This ride will be slow paced using off road paths and quiet side streets to demonstrate that cycle commuting can be pleasant and easy!
 
Other information: There's an opportunity to "pick up" people from Greenbridge (outside the cinema) around 8.15am if you contact the ride leader. Free goody bag for all participants who pre-register by e-mail

Start from: North Swindon Orbital (bike parking outside Borders)

Description: A ride aimed at cyclists who would like to ride into Swindon Town Centre but don't know the safest way of getting there. This ride will be slow paced using off road paths and quiet side streets to demonstrate that cycle commuting can be pleasant and easy!

Wheely Wicked Wednesday

Description: Free breakfast for all cycle commuters from 7.30 to 10.00 am – just show up with your bike. Bike checks available for free from a qualified bike mechanic.

Swindon CTC’s Leisurely Family Ride
7:00 – 8:30pm
Approx 7 miles Coate Water (main car park)
Free
 
Description: A gentle circular ride led by local CTC members, specifically geared towards families or those who do not cycle regularly. Cycle paths.

Sunday 21 June
 
Family Cycle Ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation
10:00am – 1:00pm
Approx 6.5 miles Coate Water Country Park
Registration fee of £2.50 per family
 
Description: Ride from Coate Water Country Park to Chiseldon by cycle path and return.
 
Other information: All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Women and girls only challenge ride
1:00 – 5:00pm
Approx 25 miles
Start from Swindon Cycles Superstore Dores Road, Upper Stratton Free

Description: Challenge yourself and ride a quarter of a century! A gentle paced and very achievable ride on a FLAT, circular route with a nice long coffee stop (about 45 mins) in the middle (after 11.5 miles). Only three small hills so don’t be put off by the distance! Led by an experienced and friendly female rider who will make sure you are okay.
 
Other information: For women and girls age 13 and above. A responsible adult must accompany all under-16s. Please bring an inner tube that fits your own bike in case of puncture and/or a puncture repair kit. Also please bring wet weather clothes and a helmet, drinks and snacks, and money for the café stop. Advance registration necessary (by Friday 19th June).
