James Geary
JAMES GEARY – on the Secret Life of Metaphor and How it Shapes the Way we See the World.Metaphor is a way of describing one thing in terms of another, like this....
He was the apple of her eye.......My muscles are rock hard.......We had a pig of a day......
...And, as Shakespeare had Romeo say: “Juliet is the sun.”
When talking, we utter one metaphor for every 10 to 20 words, or about six metaphors a minute.
Metaphor is used not only in Literature but also in politics, business, psychology, and science.
James Geary, former editor of Time magazine in Europe, is the author of the best-selling Brief History of the Aphorism.
His latest book is I is an Other: the Secret Life of Metaphor and How it Shapes the Way we See the World.
