Weekend Club Night Guide

Polly's essential guide - Something NU + return of DESIGN + a new addition to the Sunday ritual

Polly, Swindon Nightlife guide
The weather’s meant to be peachy this weekend, so let’s make the most of it!

With the last days of summer pretty much upon us now, you can check the SwindonWeb article posted recently which is your ultimate guide to the best Swindon pub gardens, patios and terraces.

That should provide you with some stop-off points to soak up the midday rays, but here’s some information on what’s going on in the evening over the coming weekend...

Something old, something ‘Nu’...

On Friday night, Billy Rees & Andy Canguelo return to Longs Bar with AfterDark to host ‘A Night of Nu Disco’.

The boys have been doing this slot for a couple of months now, and each time have managed to hold a crowd from early evening, right till the end. For those of you unfamiliar with the genre, NuDisco encompasses a renewed interest in 1970s and early 1980s disco, blended with modern technology and pin-sharp production.

Although it’s yet to have a massive influence on the UK scene, there is a firm following, and popularity is beginning to grow.

I would definitely suggest dropping into Longs Bar from 8pm on Friday to check it out, and see for yourself.

Return of Design

SUJU’s listing this Saturday is for the return of Design after a short summer break. Born in 2008 as a minimal techno night, Design has progressed to embrace all forms of underground house music at its SUJU home.

The aim of Design is being imaginative with its art work, visual projections and showcasing of new and exciting DJs... and this month they’ve done just that by booking in Laura Jones! So-say first impressions count for most things, and if that’s the case, then Laura Jones is preordained for big things.

The DJ and producer from Leeds is not only a classically-trained pianist and singer, and even studied the cello and clarinet as a child too just for good measure, but those experiences have clearly stood her in good stead (if her stylish and melodic early forays into  house music are anything to go by).

She has become one of the most talked about female DJs in the country, with some fantastically produced tracks that have made it to the online charts over the last few months of some wellrespected industry forums and listings.

Along with a whole host of local names and recognisable sounds, Design kicks off at SUJU from 11pm, with entry at £6/£7 – well worth it!

A new addition to the Sunday ritual...

Something new to round off your weekend kicks off this week with ‘Sunday People’ at Baker Street in Old Town.

Baker Street Swindon
Designed to accommodate those who work within the ‘industry’ and across the weekend, Sunday People is the perfect chance for restaurant/bar staff, customer service employees, retail workers and all personnel in-between, to head out for a night, and [hopefully] not have to worry about work in the morning.

It’s also a great opportunity to head out for an evening which is easy on the wallet; all cocktails just £4, bottled beer and shots from £2.50, and house wine priced at £7.50 for the whole bottle, who says going out has to be a costly affair?

The laid back start to Sunday will have music provided by Flashback, but I’m sure this will gather some momentum throughout, building into what Baker Street have promised it to be: a funky night!

Enjoy!
